The spacing of the modern Olympics follows that of the ancient Greek games, where a four-year span on a calendar was also known as an "olympiad" and was a defined epoch of time.

The modern version of the Olympics began in 1896, and the Winter Olympics in 1924, being held in years evenly divisible by 4. In 1986, it was decided that the Winter Olympics would be offset by 2 years from the Summer Games, beginning in 1992. So there were Winter Olympics in both 1992 and 1994 (XVI and XVII Winter Olympiads), with the next Winter Games held in 1998.
