Because where and how the pitcher throws the ball has a lot to do with where and how hard the batter hits it.

If the pitcher is throwing the ball on the corners of the plate, moving the ball up and down in the strike zone, and changing speeds generally the batter will not hit as hard as the pitcher who throws the ball, no matter how hard, over the middle of the plate.

The defense will usually set its positions based on how a pitcher is going to pitch to a batter. If the defense plays a batter to the opposite field and the pitcher throws a pitch on the outside corner at the knees, the batter is usually going to hit that ball to the opposite field, maybe sometimes up the middle. If the defense is playing the batter to the opposite field and the pitcher throws the ball belt high over the inside half of the plate, chances are the batter will hit the ball very hard and pull the ball away from where the defense is setup.

In Baseball, the players on the field, while the other team is at bat, is called the defense. The nine man defensive is centered around the position called "pitcher". This player faces all the other teams players, and the power of the pitcher to strike out batters, have batters hit easily caught balls, have hitters to hit into double plays and pick runners off bases, gives this position great power. If pitchers fail in

their performance, their team is in trouble.

Why is the pitcher considered the most important defensive player on the team in baseball?

The pitcher in baseball at all levels of the game is vital to the defensive of the team. This holds true for youth baseball, college and professional baseball as well. Generally speaking the pitcher is the most important defensive player because he is involved with every single play in the inning pitched. The same is true for the team catcher, however, the pitcher must throw his pitch in a manner that prevents a batter from getting on base. If a pitcher cannot make most batters draw a strike or have the batter hit the ball to one of his teammates then the defense is in trouble.

Is pitching more important than batting?

Baseball is an odd sport in that the defensive team has the only opportunity to score points. The pitcher has the single most important offensive position in the game. If the pitcher does not succeed in his goal of getting the ball past the batter, then the other members of the offense must "take up the slack." However, the defensive batter has the only position that can score. If you are in the dugout, then the most important player to you is the batter. If you are in the field, then the most important player is the pitcher. If you have a bat in your hand, then you better be sure the most important player is you.

Is offense more important than defense in basketball?

No, offense is not more important than defense in basketball. There will be nights where your shot will be off, and it will seem like nothing is falling for you. As a player you can't control whether the shots are falling...but you CAN control whether your defense is good or not. Defensive intensity can be regulated, but the number of shots that will fall in the game cannot be controlled. Defense will always be present.

Meaning of Zone defense?

In basketball, the two types of defense a team mostly plays are called man-to-man and zone. The man-to-man defense is where the responsibility of a player on defense is to guard a player on the offense. In the zone defense, the responsibility of the player on defense is to patrol a specific area, or zone, of the court. Click on the 'Zone Defense' link on this page to read an article to learn more.

If a coach goes on the field while his team is playing defense does it count as a visit to the mound?

Not necessarily. He could be arguing a call. If he talks to the pitcher, though. There probably is an infraction. Here is part of the rule: A manager or coach is considered to have concluded his visit to the mound when he leaves the 18-foot circle surrounding the pitcher's rubber.Rule 8.06 Comment: If the manager or coach goes to the catcher or infielder and that player then goes to the mound or the pitcher comes to him at his position before there is an intervening play (a pitch or other play) that will be the same as the manager or coach going to the mound.
