The net is lower in the middle to create a tension downwards on the cable running through the top of the net. In the past this cable has broken and due to the tension within it has whipped to one side, which can result in serious injury to anyone caught in its path. The tension downwards pulls the cable and the centre down and if it does break it will first be brought to ground and is less dangerous.

Lawn tennis is also a follow on sport from Real Tennis or Royal Tennis. In that sport the upper cable is not under high tension and therefore sags in the centre. The balls used in Real Tennis are hard like a cricket or Baseball and does not need high tension in that cable. A lawn tennis ball is much lighter and was the reason for increasing the tension on the cable. Bringing the cable down in the middle also goes someway to duplicating the original lower section of the net.

The weight of the net causes it to sag a little in the middle, there no way to prevent this..

The weight of the net has nothing to do with it. The middle of the net is lower to create a better strategy of play - hitting a shot in the middle is an easier shot to return by your opponent than a shot close to the sides. So the lower height in the middle creates a trade-off: up the middle is easier to get the ball over the net but easier for you opponent to hit back. Hitting towards the sides is harder to get over the net but is also harder for your opponent to return.

What is in the middle of a lawn tennis net?

The middle of a tennis net (lawn or otherwise) is held in place at exactly 36" from the ground by the "center strap". The measurement is checked by a tennis official (or by a player, if there is no official, as is the case for most social settings), and the strap is adjusted, as needed. Refer to the USTA link, below, for further information about tennis nets.
