The NFL has taken up the habit of awarding a Super Bowl game to teams that have built new stadiums. The New York Jets and Giants build a 1.6 billion dollar stadium in New York, so as a show of good faith the NFL awarded Super Bowl XLVIII to the New York teams because of their investment. In addition, this will be the first time the New York metropolitan area has been host to an event like the Super Bowl. The NFL expects to take full advantage of the location in terms of monetizing as much as they possibly can.
Met Life is the first (and only so far) cold weather stadium that is not a dome to be awarded a Super Bowl game. In allowing the Jets/Giants to bid on the game, the NFL bent its own rules which stated an area must have an average temp of 50 degrees or a dome in order to host a Super Bowl.
It looks as if the NFL has decided to use New York as a testing ground to see what type of impact the cold winter weather will have on the Super Bowl before deciding to award any other open air cold-weather stadiums the Super Bowl.
Cardinals president Michael Bidwell has stated "We'll all pray that it doesn't snow that day".
