Thoroughbreds was considered too long to say and was often abbreviated, so in the 50's or 60's the university made the decision to switch to the racers, a common nickname. At the time of the switch, the Baseball team had just purchased new uniforms with "Thoroughbreds" on them and asked for an extension to use the old name. Fans admired this move and it just sort of stuck.
