George Thomas "Mickey" Leland and Barbara Jordan were both distinguished alumni of Texas Southern University. Both also served as Congressional representatives for Houston's 18th Congressional District, in which Texas Southern University is located. Leland and Jordan are both noted for their passionate representation and noble efforts on behalf of their community. Jordan went on to become a Texas state senator while Leland was an ardent advocate in the case of world hunger. He died in 1989 in a plane crash on a mission to take food and supplies to Ethiopia.
