What is field hockey played on?

Field hockey playing surfaces vary depending on the level of play. The majority of games are played on grass or on synthetic turf surfaces, depending on who is running the game and the availabaility of the surfaces. Most stronger countries in the sport have turfs enough for everyone to use, while those who are not as strong, see the sport as a minor one only or who cannot normally afford a lot of them use grass or sometimes packed dirt surfaces. Most grades of field hockey above the junior-school level play on artificial surfaces like astroturf; for most national and international games, it is actually required that the surface be one of these turfs.

Is junior hockey hurting prep school hockey?

junior hockey is the wave of the future. more premier players are moving away from prep and high school hockey because they dont have to deal with the politics associated with high school hockey. one example: a senior game. often, seniors are not the best players ona team but they get to play because it is their last game. juniors hockey eliminates age brackets and separates players the way they should be separated: by skill level.

Where can you play hockey?

If you live in Europe, you can usually start playing field hockey at your primary school (grades kindergarten and up.) I don't live in Europe, so I will let someone else elaborate on that. If you live in the USA (where I live), field hockey usually starts at the middle school/junior high level (grades 7-8). Depending on where you live, you can sometimes play as a recreational, "fun" kind of thing at a rec center or go to camps hosted by your local middle/high school. This is usually more common on the east coast and in California. Once you begin playing more seriously, you can join a club. There can be any number of clubs in your area. With your club team, you play with others from all around your area, and you go to tournaments such as the Disney Field Hockey Showcase for U16 and U19 teams, held in February (there is also a Jr. Showcase held in July for U14), and National Field Hockey Festival (held over Thanksgiving, in November.)
