After the Western Canadian Hockey League folded, the Detroit NHL expansion team bought the players from the Victoria Cougars and also originally took the name "Cougars" in honor of the Victoria team. Unfortunately, however, the NHL does not consider the Red Wings to be a continuation of the Victoria franchise. Incidentally, the sweaters wore during the 2009 Winter Classic were a version of the team's original Detroit Cougar sweaters.
