Because it orbits the earth. When the moon is between the earth and sun, it is back lit and appears new. Two weeks later, when the moon is on the other side of the earth and as far from the sun as it can be, it appears full from earth. As it transitions from one of these to the other and then back again, the new moon waxes to fullness then wanes to newness again.

The Earth moves around the Sun in an ellipse (for more details, do some reading on Kepler's Laws); the ellipse in this case is fairly close to a circle; the average distance to the Sun is about 150 million kilometers.

The earth orbits the sun in an elliptical orbit and the moon orbits the earth with the same kind of orbit. Looking down from the north pole, the earth spins in a counterclockwise direction on an imaginary line called its axis once every day.

There are many specific factors of why the moon changes location in sky in a day or a year. But the main reason is because the Earth and the Moon is rotating. If you think about it, Earth only takes 24 hours to rotate on its axis, but the Moon takes 29.5 days to rotate ANDrevolve. So while we both are rotating at different rates, the moon will obviously shift locations in the sky. If you look closely, the moon will actually shift locations within a day. The Moon shifts slowly about every hour.

The Moon travels around the Earth. It takes 28 days to go around this orbit. The

Earth moves around the Sun, it takes 365 days (one year) to go all the way

around. As the Earth moves around the sun it is spinning. It takes 24 hours

(one Day) to spin around on its axis ( the axis is just an imaginary line that goes

through the middle of the Earth from the North pole to the South pole, take a

look at a spinning globe in your classroom if you're not sure.) This shows what

the Earth looks like from near the Sun. The part of the Earth that is facing the

Sun is lit up, it is daytime here, but the other half of the world is facing away

from the Sun so it is in darkness. As the Earth turns on its axis different parts

turn to face the Sun and this is why we get day and night. If you were standing

on the Earth (and you probably are!) you would see a very different picture.

From here it looks as if the Sun is moving across the sky, rising in the East and

12 hours later setting in the West.

As the sun appears to move across the sky it means that the shadows also

move. The shadows appear long in the morning and evening, but at midday they

are very short. The Moon appears to move across the night sky just as the Sun

does during the day. But as well as moving across the sky the moon appears to

change its shape from one night to the next. It seems to start as a thin crescent

then get fatter and fatter until, after a couple of weeks, it is a full circle. Then it

gets thinner and thinner until it becomes a crescent shape and eventually seems

to disappear altogether!

The Moon appears to change shape because only the part of the moon facing the

Sun is lit up. As the moon moves around the Earth we can see more or less of

the bright half. The half of the Moon that is not lit up by the sun is in total dark

and we cannot see it at all. It takes 27.3 days for the Moon to orbit the Earth,

and the changing shape of the Moon repeats itself every 29.5 days.

The moon revolves around the earth, every 27.3 days. It can be in the same direction

as the sun, or directly opposite the sun, or anywhere in between. We build our clocks

to track the sun, so at the same clock-time on different days or night, the moon can

be in many different positions in the sky.

as the earth revolves around the sun,the moon revolves around the earth. sooo that means that the sun can shine light on the moon.when we see the moon in the night sky, the sun is reflecting its light onto the moon.so the parts that the sun hits is what we see in the night sky.

hope that helped?!

They don't "change places". The Earth orbits the Sun and the Moon orbits the Earth. The combination of these motions makes it appear to us, standing on the surface of the Earth (which is itself rotating), as if the Sun and Moon move in the sky. (The Moon actually does move, but much more slowly than it appears to, because the Earth spins on its axis in slightly under 24 hours, and the moon takes a bit over 27 days to go all the way around the Earth.)

because it rotates as well as earth

and sometimes it looks like different every night

it is because everynight different stars are in the back of the star that makes the moon look like changing apperance

Well to put it simply, the moon and the sun positions in correlation with the earth changes the tides in the water and on land..( Fun fact: Did you know that if the tides happen at just the right moment it can trigger a earthquake?)
