A loop allows for two things: First, it lets spectators see the entire race from beginning to end. Second, any track which was not a loop (a straight line, for instance) would be unfeasibly long. Plus, if a track did not loop back in on itself, races of different lengths would not be possible. You couldn't just have drivers keep going around a track which isn't a loop.
The most drivers who could race in a NASCAR race is 43 right now. But back in the 40's and 50's it was about 60.
