Why does 2007 Wyoming State Quarter D with the simple horse and rider on back have on the right hand side below rider the word men clearly stamped?

Almost, but not quite. The letters are "nen"; they're the initials of the coin's engraver, Norman E. Nemeth.

Engravers' initials have caused problems with several other coins as well:

* Mercury dimes - A. A. Weinman's monogram is often mistaken for a West Point mint mark, even though the West Point Mint wasn't opened until about 40 years after the last Mercury dime was struck.

* Lincoln cents - public outcry over supposed "egotism" caused Victor D. Brenner to remove his initials from the reverse of the cent in mid-1909. They weren't restored till 1918 and then were much smaller, tucked under the edge of Lincoln's shoulder. * Jefferson nickels - Felix Schlag's initials did not appear on the coin for almost 30 years. They were only put on after he died. * Roosevelt dimes - right-wing zealots who hated Roosevelt claimed that John Sinnock's "JS" on the coin's obverse was actually a coded reference to Soviet dictator Josef Stalin (!!)
