∙ 12y agoIt's because the New York market is large enough to support two teams -- one in the National League and one in the American League. In fact, there were three teams in the area -- the Yankees, the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants -- until 1958. When the Dodgers and the Giants moved to the West Coast, the Mets were created in 1962 to fill the void in the National League.
