∙ 17y agoOne reason could be because the ball has gotten wet from sweat, ground condensation, etc. Another reason could be because the ball has cut or gashes in it. The most common reason is to speed the game along, especially on past balls!

∙ 13y agoHe doesn't use a new ball every pitch. The life of a major league baseball is only about 3 pitches before it is fouled out of play or replaced due to a cut or abrasion.
