A Russian rink has a larger surface than an NHL rink. Having a larger surface allows Canadian hockey players (that are known for their ice speed) to skate faster and as such, generally results in a more enjoyable game for both the players and the fans.

Anyone that plays hockey prefers the larger rink due to it is easier to setup plays and have over puck control. A larger rink doesn't really play towards Canadians cause we aren't really known for our speed but for a puck controlling abilities.
