honestly, i laugh at people that surf purely for fitness.
we surf because we love it, it is not a sport, it is a way of life that you grow up with.
i surf because it gives me adrenaline
while i dont surf to get fit, it does make you fit, my upper arm strength is booming, my balence is perfected, i can do 400 lbs leg press (from 150), and i can paddle out during the hardest biggest days. but Surfing just to get fit is a waste of time, you gota love it enough to get it right
Surfing can be a great form of exercise--like any form of movement. But it is tough to use surfing for a consistent form of training because waves and swells are not consistent. Days can go by--even weeks--where the surfing spots are completely flat (no waves breaking). Something like stand up paddle surfing is good since you can do it in almost any condition and it doesn't require consistent breaking surf. But traditional surfing lacks the well-roundedness of a typical training program. That is why most surfers end up supplementing their surfing with some form of cross-training.
