People of many naitonalities are strong in the Mormon faith. One reason why it seems Latin Americans are is because many of them emigrate to the U.S. It is not as common for a European Mormon to move to the U.S. Also, Latin Americans tend to be very religious anyway, regardless of the denomination. This has sometimes been attributed to the humble circumstances many of them live in.
They hoped to escape discrimination and find beter educational and economic opportunites, that's why African Americans began to move to northern cities in the 1890s.
Americans in the early 1800’s had to out of the east coast cities because of overcrowding in the metropolitan areas. Americans move towards the west to cities like St. Louis and Chicago.

It is probable that the latter is the driving reason.
The postwar boom of the 1950s affected many white Americans by causing them to move out of the cities and into suburban developments. Many people held "white collar" jobs and moved away from farming.
