Finding gold is tough. Most of the gold was found by relatively few miners. There were thousands of people panning gold on the same rivers, and there just wasn't enough gold for everyone.

The Forty-Niners reached California during the Gold Rush mainly by land and sea routes. Many traveled overland on foot, horseback, or by wagon along the California Trail or other routes. Others sailed around Cape Horn or took steamships to reach the west coast.
Some did, while many more barely eked out a living by prospecting. Eventually they took other jobs such as farmers, tradesmen, and dockworkers.
