They named it softball because the game of softball was derived from Baseball. The Baseball had a hard core whereas the softball has a soft core, so they named it softball. Although the ball is not softball the core of the ball is soft.

How did they get the name softball?

Well, I am a softball player, so I know this question. The reason that a softball got the name softball is because, you may not know it, but inside of a softballs hard outer layer, is is soft and squishy. You should try it sometime. Cut the lace from the softball, it could take a couple minutes, and then lacerate is open and feel. I bet you will be surprised!!!!! Thanks for the question! -Shannon
