people "make" Martial Arts so they can be able to attack and defend themselves in tough situations. martial arts is a much more complex version of fighting, it isn't just about punching and kicking, there is much more

There is a difference between martial arts and martial skills. This is exemplified by the Japanese Judo and Jujitsu. The First is a martial art where the underlying philosophy and the techniques are taught and the second where just the techniques are taught. It is a good idea to be able to fight and defend yourself properly and effectively. the martial arts are a formalized teaching system to train people in these skills. Every community or society has a martial arts training for its people, however in todays world the arts of orient systems, French canne de combat and savat, African stick fighting and others are also martial arts and martial skills.

Both Morihei Ueshiba and Miyamoto Musashi have produced excellent books which are regarded as martial skills technical instruction but are actually martial arts philosophy works.
