She started skating at the age of 9 and when she was 11 she skated poorly in a juvenile championship. In her autobiography, she said that embarrassment gave her a jolt and she became serious about competition from that moment forward. She dedicated herself to skating and became the best in the world, winning the gold medal in the 1968 Olympics in Grenoble, France.
