It didn't, the World Series in 1919 went eight games with the Cincinnati Reds defeating the Chicago White Sox 5 games to 3. Of course, that was the famous "Black Sox Scandal" after it was discovered that seven White Sox players were bribed to throw the series. The number of games in the World Series varied in the early years and didn't settle in to a best of seven series until 1922.
