Why can a baseball player hit the ball farther when he grips the bat near the bottom than he could if he moved his hands halfway up the bat?

It is simple mechanics. He gets a better mechanical advantage with a larger lever arm. When you 'choke up' on a bat you shorten the lever arm and decrease the mechanical advantage.
Simple analogy; think of using a wrench. If you use a 6inch wrench with 100 lbs of force you are creating a 50 ft-lb torque. If you use the same force with a 12" wrench you create a 100 ft-lb torque.
The same principle applies to the Baseball player.
