Light rays bend when they enter from one medium to another of different density. The amount of bending is determined by the refractive indices of the two media. If one medium has a particular curved shape, it functions as a lens. The cornea, humours, and crystalline lens of the eye together form a lens that focuses images on the retina. Our eyes are adapted for viewing in air. Water, however, has approximately the same refractive index as the cornea (both about 1.33), effectively eliminating the cornea's focusing properties. When our eyes are in water, instead of their focusing images on the retina, they now focus them far behind the retina, resulting in an extremely blurred image from hypermetropia.

∙ 14y agoThey can, try it for yourself. But somethings in the bottom of you bath tub put your face in and open up your eyes, you can focus your eyes underwater. I don't know if it will work for you but it did work for me.

∙ 12y agoIf you dont use gogles and just open your eyes it will be blury and burn for a second if you use gogles then you should be able to see clearly and it wont burn.

Why will goggles allow a swimmer underwater to focus more clearly on what he is looking at?
Goggles help you see better underwater due to the change in the speed of light and the Brownian motion of the water. First, light slows down in water. Underwater, with the water pressing against your eyeball, the index of refraction changes and makes the lens in your eye out of focus. Browning motion causes a large number of molecules to pound away at your lens and keep it out of focus. When you put on your goggles, then your eyes work like they do in air. Light is going at the speed of light. Water is not pounding against your lens getting it out of focus.

If you look through a sniper scope with night vision goggles will the picture be in night vision?
Yes it will, it may be you need to focus the goggles on the scope to make it a bit easier, and its a bit awkward because the goggles can bang into the scope. But I have mounted my 3 to 9 leupold day scope well forward on my AR 15 and I can easily look through and identify the target and hold the cross hairs on it, without any IR light. Short answer is YES!!

Why refraction is important to a crocodile?
