"Dawgs" is a nickname given to the defense by ex-Brown cornerback Hanford Dixon which is where the "Dawg Pound" comes from. It is stated that Dixon, and other members of the Browns secondary would bark at each other during games. This was picked up on by the Browns fans sitting in the east end zone which at that time started with the first row at field level. The fans began to dress is dog costumes and bring dog bones which would often be thrown at opposing teams.
