Prior to the widespread implementation of the metric system, imperial measurements, such as inches, feet, yards, and miles, were used. This measurement system is still used predominantly in the United States and other countries, though most now rely upon the metric system (millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers, and so on). At the time the Laws of the Game were established, the imperial system was used in England, where the Laws were first written. Although the Laws now indicate metric measurements, the imperial measurements are kept as a matter of tradition.
