The first official Yankees Old Timers' Day was in 1946. It has been held every year since. The Yankees started the tradition back in the late 1930's, with the most popular being Lou Gehrig Day on July 4, 1939.
It was the late organist Eddie Layton, who played during Yankees games for three decades and at Rangers and Knicks games for 18 years.
In 1979, the Yankees retired the number 15 in honor of their late captain Thurman Munson.
