1929In 1929 the New York Yankees decided to wear numbers on the backs of their jerseys. The numbers corresponded to each player's general position in the lineup.for example Babe Ruth wore No. 3, since he usually batted third, and Lou Gehrig wore No. 4 as he batted fourth.

The Yankees introduced uniform numbers on their jerseys in 1929. Originally, the numbers indicated the player's spot in the batting order, i. e. Ruth #3, Gehrig #4, etc., but that changed when other teams started to give player's numbers so that the fans could identify them by referring to the scorecards sold at the stadiums.
