17 teams have gone undefeated in the regular season and of those only 1 (Indiana in 1976) has gone on to win the National Championship.
No team every team lost at least 1 game
UCLA
The last women's team to go undefeated and go on to win the national championship was the 2001-2002 Connecticut Huskies that went 39-0. Tennessee Volunteers were undefeated in 1998 and wre also 39-0.
The last men's team to go undefeated during the regular season and win the tournament was Indiana in 1976.
Lots of teams did not win. Only 9 teams actually won the championship.
Yes. They won 80+ straight games...
13 teams have finished undefeated in regular season since the advent of the NCAA tourney, none have been national champion since the 1976 Indiana Hoosier team. Seven of 13 have won the championship. 4 that did not that I know of are 78-89 Indiana State, 78-79 Alcorn State, 91 UNLV, 2004 St Joes. I am obviously missing 2. But essentiall 7 of 12 undefeated teams that went to tourney won tourney. 78-79 Alcorn State team was not invited to the tourney. Story from last season There have been only 12 teams in NCAA major college basketball history to go through the regular season undefeated, and seven which went undefeated all the way to becoming national champions. Those seven teams, the 1956 San Francisco Dons, the 1957 North Carolina Tarheels, The 1964, 1967, 1972, and 1973 UCLA Bruins, and the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers, are widely recognized as some of the best teams in the history of intercollegiate athletics. The 2004 version of Stanford and Saint Joseph's men's basketball squads aren't drawing those comparisons yet, but an undefeated run to a national championship in today's college sports landscape, could definitely change some people's opinions. NBA teams that win the championship receive the Larry O'Brien Trophy, which is awarded to the team that wins the NBA Finals.
Arsenal went undefeated in the 2003-2004 premier league season
Absolutely not. They posess none of the characteristics of a championship team. Loook at the list of past champions: http://www.nba.com/history/finals/champions.html Over the last 27 years, only 8 distinct teams have won the championship. There have not been any suprise teams. They usually have the top record or are within the top 3 teams of the regular season.
No, teams do not get to keep the Stanley Cup if they win the championship. The Stanley Cup is a trophy that is awarded to the winning team each year, but it is returned at the end of the season to be awarded again the following year.
