In 1974, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw got off to a rough start early in the season and was benched in favor of Joe Gilliam. Gilliam would complete 96 of 212 passes in 1974. Gilliam did not do much better than Terry. By the end of the season Bradshaw had earned his job back on was on his way towards helping the Steelers win their first Super Bowl. Bradshaw completed only 67/148 passes that season but with the Steel Curtain that was all that was needed.
Joe Gilliam was a quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1972-1975. Joe was the starting quarterback for the Steelers in 1974 for the first 6 games, before being replaced by Terry Bradshaw.
Gilliam was named starting quarterback of the Steelers in 1974 after the previous quarterback, Terry Bradshaw, and other veterans went on strike. In Gilliam's first six starts, the Steelers posted a 4-1-1 record, but Pittsburgh head coach Chuck Noll restored Bradshaw at quarterback the rest of the way. The Steelers finished with a 10-3-1 regular-season record and went on to capture their first Super Bowl title. Gilliam's problems with drug abuse eventually sent him on a downward spiral and derailed his NFL career.
