∙ 14y agoThe main struggle for control was between Leon Trotsky and Joseph Stalin. However Grigory Zinoviev and Nikolai Bukharin were also high enough in the ruling party that they could also vie for control. Stalin allied himself with Zinoviev to oust Trotsky. Then allied himself with Bukharin to eliminate Zinoviev. By then Stalin was so entrenched in the party that he cut ties with Bukharin and simply assumed power in the absence of meaningful opposition.

∙ 13y agoImmediately after Lenin's death, the power struggle was between Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky, which Stalin won. After Trotsky was exiled, the power struggle continued only now it was among Stalin, Gregori Zinoviev and Nikolai Bukharin. Stalin also won those matches and assumed full power in 1929.
