During the Second World War, land at Raglan belonging to the Tainui Awhiro Maori was appropriated by the New Zealand Government for the purpose of building a military airfield. this was never built and instead of the land being returned to local Maori it was eventually turned into a nine-hole golf course. In the late 70's plans were made to turn it into an 18-hole course which involved expanding the course to cover sacred sites, including burial sites. Reaction to this began the movement to have the land returned to it's rightful owners.Tthe movement was led by Eva Rickard who was one of 17 protesters arrested for trespass on the course in 1978.Tthe land was finally returned in 1987.
