Moses Fleetwod "Fleet" Walker is credited by some as the first African American to play Major League Baseball. He played for the Toledo Blue Stockings minor league team in 1883. The Toledo Blue Stockings became a Major League Baseball Team in 1884. Walker returned to the minor leagues in 1885 and played until his release in 1889.

Other research indicates that William Edward White played as a substitute in one professional baseball game for the Providence Grays on June 21, 1879, making him the first black major league baseball player.
