Mike Hawthorn became the first British F1 World Champion when he drove his Ferrari chassis to the 1958 World Championship.

It was his only World Championship and since the 1959 season, the Mike Hawthorn Memorial Trophy has been handed out to the best British or Commonwealth F1 Driver of the season.
