In 1986 England had two captains :
* David Gower - West Indies tour (Feb-Apr 1986), Home series v India (May-June 1986).
* Mike Gatting - Home series v India (Jun-July 1986) and v New Zealand (Jul-Aug 1986) Australian tour (Oct 1986-Feb 1987).
Gower team lost in the West Indies 5 tests to nil and was put on probation by the TCCB (Test and County Cricket Board) for the beginning of the international series v India in 1986. He was dismissed as captain after India beat England in the First Test Match at Lords and was replaced by Mike Gatting.
Gatting captained for the remainder of the series against India. (1-0 series defeat) and New Zealand (1-0 series defeat). However Gatting lead England to a success Ashes tour of Australia (2-1 series victory).
