Answermany black people play hockey. As stated above the number of black hockey players is growing. Don't think the low number of black players has anything to do with prejudice or racism, however. It is simply a matter of population. The nations that produce elite hockey players, (Canada, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Czech Republic, etc.) simply have smaller black populations compared to Caucasion citizens. In the one country that does have a large black population, the USA, black athletes tend to gravitate to other sports rather than to hockey.
Hockey New Zealand, the national body administering field hockey in the country, recorded 45,581 registered players in the 2011 winter season - from primary school players up to the Black Sticks national teams. This is a little over one percent of the New Zealand total population. 52.7 percent of hockey players in New Zealand are female.
