That was Teddy Flack who won gold in the 1500 meter run and 800 meter run at the first Modern Games, the 1896 Olympics in Athens. Flack was born in London, England and moved to Australia as a young child. The first native born Australian to win gold was swimmer Frederick Lane who won the 200 meter freestyle and 200 meter obstacle events at the 1900 Games in Paris. Lane was from Manly, New South Wales.
