Mentioned in the Book of Samuel, Abner was King Saul's cousin and commander of his army (1 Samuel 14:50, 20:25). After Saul's death, Abner made Ish-Bosheth king over Israel, while David reigned concurrently over the tribe of Judah at Hebron.
Abner later switched to the side of David and granted him control over the tribe of Benjamin. King David's nephew Joab slew Abner at the gate of Hebron, perhaps to avenge Asahel, whom Abner had killed.
David had Abner buried in Hebron (2 Samuel 3:31-39). His tomb, according to tradition, is not far from the Cave of Machpelah.
