Lord Stanley of Preston, a 19th century Governor General of Canada, bought the Stanley Cup in London for 25 guineas and donated it as a Challenge Cup to be awarded to the best amateur Ice Hockey team in Canada. He never saw a Stanley Cup game himself , as his term expired and he was recalled to Britain before any games were played.
