The Cowboys' 1971 season began with another quarterback controversy involving Craig Morton and Roger Staubach. The previous year, both players alternated at quarterback until head coach Tom Landry put his confidence in Morton, who promptly guided the Cowboys to their first Super Bowl appearance. They shared duty again during the 1971 season, but the policy reached the point of futility when Landry had the QBs alternating between plays. Landry eventually gave the ball to Staubach, who won the last seven regular-season games and quarterbacked the Cowboys to their first Super Bowl championship.
