The goalkeeper has no mark; they simply do what they can, unless a player gets a breakaway. However, this is more to do with simply making the tackle and being in the plpace to do it, stopping a shot or the opportunity for one, rather than marking.

The fullbacks (or equivalent) should mark the posts; this normally means the wings if they are there, but otherwise should pick up any unmarked players in the circle.

The wing-halves (or equivalent) should mark the inners when on tight defense, or the wings when play is out of the defending 23-metre area.

The centrehalf should mark the centreforward of the opposing team.

The centreforward is usually more concerned with getting away from players rather than staying around them. If necessary, they should be prepared to attack the centrehalf for the ball, but this is again more of a situation where they are in the right place to make a tackle, not because they are marking per se.

The inners should mark the wing-halves; these two positions are the midfield, and generally should stay on their marks whenever their team is not in possession.

The wings, like the centreforward, are also more worried about staying away from their mark, but should make every attempt to tackle the half or fullback if possible - applying pressure in general, in hope of getting an intercept or forcing an error that gains possession in some way, rather than just trying to tackle man-to-man.

The scoring system in Field Hockey is the same as in Ice Hockey and association football. The score counts how many goals each team has scored, and the team with the most goals at full time wins.

To score a goal, the ball has to cross the goal line into the goal after last being touched by an attacking player in the shooting circle (from 1 January 2013, "own goals" will be introduced, so a goal is scored regardless of which team touched the ball last in the circle). Goals don't count if the ball has not been touched by a player in the shooting circle.

Goals also do not count if during a penalty corner, the first attempt at goal is a hit (i.e. with a back swing) and as a result the ball crosses the goal line at a height of more than 46cm (18in) above the ground (the same height as the backboards on the goal).
