i searched NADA guide and found a '72 dolphin sr. made by now defunct 1972 "DOLPHIN UNIVERSAL PLASTIC PROD." they did not have a listing for a '73
The Dolphin Sr. is not being manufactured at this time. The last boats were made around 2000 or 2001. The owner of the manufacturing rights and mold is at Lake Conroe, Texas.
The dolphin senior was like a sunfish, but an inch or two longer and wider. Two adults can sail her. Three might sink her.... I had one as a kid, and LOVED it. Too bad they don't make them any more. More powerful than a sunfish.
Dragging a dinghy behind a sailboat depends entirely on the distance and location of the cruise and the weather. For instance towing the dinghy behind on a short afternoon coastal cruise in protected waters in calm weather may be fine, however towing a dinghy from the East Coast of the United States to the Caribbean would be difficult and the dinghy may be lost.

One a sailboat, you should have one (1) for everybody. If you have a dinghy, keep 1 extra (if 2-4 people in family) or 2 extra (if 5-6 family members). Make sure everyone has 1, there is at least 1 extra in the dinghy, and extra somewhere else on the boat for emergencies.
a dinghy would be a small (6 to 16 foot) sailboat, these can have almost any sail rig. the type of rig you described is called a sloop. a sloop is a sailboat with a triangular mainsail and a jib (this sail configuration is called a marconi rig, or bermudian rig), and are very common. so a small, one masted vessel with a mainsail and jib would just be called a sloop, or dinghy.
