In 1965, Sherman Poppen invents The Snurfer for his daughter Wendy by bolting two skis together. He held snurfer contests. One day Jake Burton came to one with his board he made off the idea of the snurfer. He started marketing as a "snow board" and got all the credit for inventing the snow board or snurfer.

A Snurfer was the original snowboard. A wide ski with a rope attached to the nose. No straps, just pegs or staples to plant your boots on. Invented in Michigan in the late 60's. It was a blast.

When did snowbording first start?

In 1964 Sherman Poppen built a surfboard for the snow. It was basically two kids' skis bolted together. In 1965, he created the "snurfer" a mix of snow and surfer which was sold in toy stores and sold over a million units In 1970, Dimitrije Milovich, a surfer, experimented with laminating glass and gravel on a board and used nylon straps. His company "Winterstick" is probably the first snowboard company. In 1977, Jake Burton who was an avid snurfer decided to found his own company in Vermont. Starting with a small collection of "snowboards" which were flexible wooden planks with water ski bindings.

What were the first pair of skis made of?

About the same as they do right now, except in 1860 skis and poles were wood and the bindings were leather straps. The biggest change is in the bindings, which are made to release when a certain amount of force is exerted against them to keep you safe.

Why was snowboarding invented?

To have fun. Foolish question. There is no reason for the creation of the snowboard. An 8th grader back in the 50s created one in his shop class, and he started to make more and sell more. *It all started with the Snurfer in 1965, this guy sherman poppen created it for his daughter when she stood up on her sled. Snowboarding itself was influenced by surfing and skateboarding. Burton was one of the main brands in the beginning and is still the largest today. If you want more info just check out the wikipedia page for snowboarding and the snurfer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowboarding http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SnurferThe snurfer really started it all. this dude sherman poppen created it when his 11 year old daughter stood up on a sled. That's how it got started. It got big when kids/people wanted to rebel against skiing. You can find a lot of information online all you have to do is look for it.The invention of the snowboard followed the inventions of the skateboard and surfboard. For obvious reasons (different trick possibilities than on skis, awesome feel to carving, etc... ) skaters and surfers wanted to board on snow. Its as simple as that.

Who built the first snowboard?

Jack Burchett built a snowboard like sled in 1929. He did this by taking a piece of plywood and used horse reigns to tie the feet to the board. The next snowboard like sled was invented in 1965 by Sherman Poppen called the Snurfer. The Snurfer is often credited as being the first snowboard.Answer.Jack Burton in 1929. He cut out a plank of plywood and he strapped his feet on it with clothslines and horse reins. Its a point of debate but speculation indicates that this was either Sherman Poppen with the creation of his 'Snurfer' Tom Sims that wanted to 'surf the snow'.Burton was the first to make it popular! Think of mr Burton as Henry Ford with the model T. I was the the first to make a snowboard! I don't want the credit...... but they keep giving it to me!Sherman Popper, he put two skis together and a handle for riders to keep their balance. It was created in 1965.nobody knows really. snowboarding is more about the pioneers that made it popular
