Soccer was not invented by a single person. Soccer was first institutionalized in England at Cambridge University in 1848. Since then, there have been several evolutions of the game. Today, the highest governing association of soccer is FIFA (International Federation of Association Football), which began in 1904.

Centuries before soccer became an organized sport, several similar games had emerged all around the world. An example of this is the game called "Cuju" which was played in ancient China. Ancient Romans and Greeks are said to have played similar games as well.
