Mary Beth Dunnichay in Synchronized Diving. Born 02-15-1993.
Experienced youth
Mary Beth Dunnichay will make her Olympic debut on synchronized platform with fellow 15-year-old Haley Ishimatsu. The two have competed together internationally since 2006 and finished fifth on synchronized platform at the 2007 World Championships. Dunnichay said it was "really fun, like the Olympics because it wasn't just diving" - swimming, Water Polo and synchronized swimming also were held at the same time. Despite her youth, Dunnichay said she wasn't intimidated. "I learned I'm up there, that I can compete," she said. Indy crew
Dunnichay has been training at the National Training Center in Indianapolis for the last five years. Her hometown of Elwood is about an hour north, and she used to dive in Noblesville, which is the hometown of fellow Olympian David Boudia. She meets Boudia there each morning to carpool to practice in Indianapolis. Ishimatsu also trains there, as does Boudia's synchro partner, Thomas Finchum. Dunnichay's sister, Danielle, studies nursing at IUPUI in Indianapolis and Mary Beth often hangs out at her apartment between practices. Family ties
Watching her brother Caleb dive, Dunnichay thought it looked fun and decided to try it at age 6. She now trains six hours per day, six days a week and is home schooled by private tutors from Elwood's school system. Despite not spending the day in class with her friends, Dunnichay says it works better socially, because before she was "rushing in and out of school anyway." Caleb is now diving at Notre Dame after transferring from Auburn. Her other brother, Jacob, will be a senior in high school this fall. Dunnichay's mom, Marian, is a former gymnast.
