What boxing trainer brought the mayweather style of mittwork to the east coast?

The Mayweather style of boxing mittwork, in particular, Roger Mayweather's boxing mittwork system, was introduced to the East Coast, namely, New Jersey, by a professional & amateur boxing trainer named James Ricky Coward aka "Coach Rick" in November of 2006 at his boxing gym, "T - Rex Boxing Club". Coach Rick stated that he first saw Roger Mayweather on mitts while watching an old John Brown boxing training dvd called "Mastering the Mitts". After seeing the amazing mittwork Roger was conducting he decided to teach himself the system by watching and taking notes, practicing it with fighters in his gym and after trial and error, he began to become proficient at it. This style or system of boxing mittwork was frowned upon by most "Old School" trainers in the New Jersey Tri-state area. But after a number of years building a following for his adaptation of the Mayweather mittwork system and working with some very accomplished professional and amateur boxers & Mma fighters, some of whom were already world champions, former world champions or national / golden gloves champions, people started to take notice. Coach Rick began teaching the system to other trainers locally and eventually they began to come to him from around the country and the world. The local "old school" trainers began taking notice of the unique mittwork system designed by the renowned Roger Mayweather and they began to understand that it wasn't done just for show, but that it had very real boxing training benefits. Coach Rick has and still does to this day pay homage to Roger Mayweather as the "Architect" of the unique boxing mittwork system he has adapted for use with his fighters and general fitness clients. To date Coach Rick has proven to be the most high profile and staunch defenders of the system and its effectiveness, few other trainers have demonstrated that same type of fortitude when faced with criticism from fellow boxing coaches.

What do I look for in private boxing lessons?

You can find boxing trainers at your local gym, boxing ring, Craigslist or by searching a directory for your local city. The first thing you should look for when choosing a boxing trainer is that they be certified by a nationally recognized organization. Also make sure that they have liability insurance and that they provide their business policies in writing. If you've gotten those things covered it's time to find a trainer that is suitable to your needs. Before signing up for any classes go watch your trainer in action with another boxer. Are you impressed with the trainer or do their moves look sloppy? You want to work with someone who will keep you motivated even after your energy is drained.
