Phil Housley 1,495 games (1982-2003) and never won the Stanley Cup. The American-born defenseman came close in 1998 when his Washington Capitals were swept in the Stanley Cup finals by the Detroit Red Wings.
Teppo Numminen (1988-present) is the longest serving active player, with 1,372 games played. Sadly, his Buffalo Sabres did not make the 2009 playoffs.
Two players have an opportunity to remove themselves from this unfortunate list this season. Jeremy Roenick (1,363 games without a Cup) on the San Jose Sharks and Mats Sundin (1,346) with the Vancouver Canucks.
Note: I am using regular season games played as my measure for length of service. Not counting the 2009 playoffs, Housley played 85 playoff games, Numminen 82, Roennick 148, and Sundin 83. That puts Roenick ahead of Numminen on the active player list.
