It was smart for Germany to sneak Lenin back into Russia because they were currently at war with Russia. Germany wanted Lenin to take Russia out from the inside, creating a rebellion that would collapse the government and lead to German victory.

communism Bolshevism and/or Leninism combines the ideas of Marx and Lenin although Lenin has changed some of Marx's ideas around. Thus there is a distinction between Bolshevism/Leninism and Marxism.
Yes, the war was extremely unpopular. The morale of Russia's military was broken, having lost all confidence in their leadership. Supplies were not being delivered due to Russia's inadequate transportation system. Lenin was fortunate that he was given the opportunity to simply end the war.
Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky masterminded the October Revolution.
Lenin and the Bolsheviks began their rise to power in earnest when Lenin returned to Russia from exile in Switzerland in April 1917 after the February 1917 Revolution which toppled the Tsar. From then on, Lenin and the Bolsheviks worked against the new Provisional Government by promising an end to World War 1, redistribution of land to peasants and an end to shortages of food and manufactured goods. They spread their revolutionary ideas among the soldiers, workers and peasants until they were able to overthrow the Provisional Government in the October Revolution of 1917 and take over full political governmental power in Russia.
It wasn't Russia as a whole. It was the leader of the country. Vladmir Ilyich Lenin in 1918 made Russia Communist after the Russian Civil War, in which the Red Russians defeated the white Russians.
The Bolshevik Revolution led by Vladimir Ilych Lenin marched in and captured and executed the last Czar of Russia along with his family and so Lenin implemented Communism.
Germany hoped Lenin would be disruptive and stir up trouble in Russia in order to spark a revolution that would eventually take Russia out of World War 1, so it sent Lenin back to Russia. This would permit Germany to concentrate its military forces on other fronts instead of having to split them between two fronts. The strategy succeeded quickly since Lenin arrived in Russia in April 1917 and by October 25, 1917 (old style Russian calendar; November 7, new style) engineered the coupe that toppled the Provisional Government . In March 1918, Lenin, Russia signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk ending Russia's participation in World War 1.
Lenin was in Switzerland when the February 1917 revolution broke out. He was taken completely by surprise that it had happened as were virtually all of the various Russian revolutionaries. This was because that revolution was not a planned event. The uprising began as a spontaneous uprising by the people in St. Petersburg as they suffered with shortages of food due to World War I and the Russian Tsarist government's inability or unwillingness to take care of its people. The German High Command wanted Russia out of the war, so it transported Lenin from Switzerland through Finland to Russia in the hope that Lenin would cause a revolution which would take Russia out of the war. It worked.
Once in power he turned his back on all programs of reform, but he kept his promise to take Russia out of World War I.
