Probably the best who should be known in the United States is Bruce McLaren. He designed and drove the Mclaren Can-Am cars in the 60's and 70's along with Denny Hulme who is also a New Zelander.
McLaren's dominated the series and the team eventually moved in to Formula One where it still runs.
