Ping Pong or Table Tennis started in England towards the end of the 19th century around the 1880's when, after a evening meal some Victorians decided to turn their dining room tables into miniature versions of the traditional tennis playing field. many different every-day objects were used in constructing the sport. They used a line of books as the net and rackets were lids from empty cigar boxes. When the game first started it was called many different names. "Whif whaf," "gossamer," and "flim flam" were commonly used to describe it.

Some people say that it was first played by English soldiers in India.

The game has its origins in England as an after-dinner amusement for upper-class Victorians in the 1880s. Mimicking the game of tennis in an indoor environment, everyday objects were originally enlisted to act as the equipment. A line of books would be the net, a rounded top of a Champagne cork or knot of string as the ball, and a cigar box lid as the racket. Pulled answer from Wikipedia.

Originating in England in the late 19th century as "lawn tennis," with its roots going back to the ancient game of real tennis, tennis spread first throughout the English-speaking world, particularly among the upper classes. Tennis is now once again an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society, by all ages, and in many countries around the world. It can be played by anyone who can hold a racket, including people in wheelchairs. In the United States, there is a collegiate circuit which is organized by the National Collegiate Athletics Association.

The game of table tennis has its roots in lawn tennis.

When lawn tennis became very popular in the 1870s & 1880s, game makers tried to emulate its success by developing indoor versions of the game.

So there were card games, board & dice games, rackets & balloon games and even tiddledy winks tennis games.

But the first use of the name Table Tennis occurred on a board and dice game by J.H.Singer of New York around 1884 and it's also known that a game of Table Tennis was offered in the 1887 game catalogue of George S. Parker, founder of the famed Parker Brothers in America.

But the first action game of tennis on a table was in 1890, so it was David Foster of England who is the founder/inventor of table tennis in 1890, and so the first players would have been from England.
