Two-time All-American fullback Bob Ferguson of Ohio State finished second in the 1961 Heisman balloting in one of the closest races ever. Syracuse running back Ernie Davis won the award 824 to 771, edging Ferguson by 53 votes. Davis became the first African-American athlete to win the Heisman Trophy.
